The past couple of days here in southern Arizona have been very interesting. The temperature dropped to record lows and pipes have frozen, water fountains have turned into ice sculptures, there have been natural gas shortages and the hardware stores look like they've been looted. No pipe insulation to be found, anywhere. No electric heaters.
We received a call from our next-door-neighbor who alerted us to the fact that we'd lost a couple of sprinkler heads and two of our shrubs were coated with ice. Investigating further, Phil discovered that the main sprinkler valve had cracked and had to be replaced asap. After digging the ant hill out of our water shut-off box, Phil was able to turn off the water to the house. Luckily, he found the part he needed at the hardware store (major score!) and speedily replaced the valve. Water was turned back on soon thereafter.
It is interesting to see how quickly life can be turned upside-down by the weather. And to remember that, smart as we think we are, we aren't in charge of much of anything after all...
Warmer days ahead...
